My Story

My name is Paula, and it’s a pleasure to welcome you to my website.
The name Mountain Viewe is inspired by the wonderful scenery from my home here in the South Wales Valleys – we have stunning mountain views and, as you might expect in Wales, we also see plenty of sheep, so putting these together becomes "Mountain Viewe Fibre Arts!"

Wool and knitting has been my passion for many, many years since my mum taught me to knit as a young girl. I have fond memories of her taking us into wool shops to pick out patterns and yarns. I’m so grateful to her for the encouragement she gave me into what has become a lifelong love. Sadly we lost her in 2021, but Mountain Viewe Fibre Arts is her legacy to me which I treasure. I hope I have made her proud of the yarn and skills I have learnt over the years.

From my passion of wool came the desire to want to produce my own yarn. It has taken me many years to go into the spinning adventure, but after buying my first spinning wheel (an Ashford Traditional) I’ve never looked back. I am self-taught at spinning, and it’s now taken over my life - spinning yarn is so addictive, I’m always wanting to try new fibres, and then dying them. The best thing of all is that my yarn is all earth friendly as natural wool is biodegradable. I also discovered plant-based fibre which has opened up another side of spinning yarn as it is also biodegradable and earth friendly.

Why not acrylic?
You might wonder why I use these yarns when it’s possible to buy much cheaper, mass-produced acrylic yarn. Well, firstly the process to actually manufacture acrylic has a huge carbon footprint, then the acrylic fibres themselves don’t actually biodegrade – they just sit in landfill for years releasing harmful toxins, and when items made with acrylic are washed, they release microplastics into the wastewater. If I can make a small difference reducing acrylic yarn being used, I’ll be happy and proud to be part of making a better earth for our future, and our children's children's future. You too can do the same by reducing or stopping using acrylic all together, so I hope you enjoy browsing through my online shop, and with every purchase knowing you are contributing to a more positive future for our planet.
